Spanking Scandals

May 15, 2008

Monica wrote to Dr. Phil because she says she has to discipline her four children every day out of anger. She spanks them, has hit them with a belt, made them miss meals, tied their hands together until they professed to like each other – even leaving belt marks on her son out of anger. Her husband admits to spanking the kids, too, at times. Also, we meet Elizabeth who pulled her 12-year old son out of school after he was “paddled” as a form of punishment. She we aware that the school could use corporal punishment, but was shocked when she says her son was beaten so severely he was left bruised. Keila is a teacher who has used paddling in previous teaching positions, and says she wishes it was an option at her current school, asking if kids don’t fear the paddle what will they fear? Guest Peggy Dean, spokesperson for Violence Free Classrooms, believes spanking in schools should be outlawed, adding that schools are the only institution in the United States where spanking is legal. A frank DR. PHIL discussion about spanking for disciplinary purposes, Friday, May 16th at 7pm only on News Channel 11.
